I AM JUST SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW.

So I was sitting in the kitchen, being all "I'm working on my yuletide so I could actually send my beta something" when I run over to tumblr to see my beta's letter again (not that my recipient's letter isn't great, but there was something in my beta's letter that sparked me for things and so I wanted to remember what it was, since she requested the same fandom) and then I clicked on her tags because, you know its tumblr, what else do you do?

This showed up. OMG GUYS I AM JUST SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW.

So Sam is over, and Kat is supposed to be studying so I had to leave the room because I was going to be making weird noises of joy while reading. ANYWAYS.

So anyways, bonus chapters! I wanted to talk about them in general out of the cut because I'm curious about things. Scott Westerfeld called this bonus "fan fiction" of himself, which is really interesting to me. I think if I were going to write something like this I would call it a short story with the same characters rather then fan fiction -- because well I'm not exactly a fan of my own writing?

Anyways. I was thinking about it because I am planning my epic fic for Leviathan, and this throws a minor wrench in my plan if I consider this to be cannon. But if Scott is calling it fan fiction, does that mean its not cannon? Some authors (creators, directors etc) consider their work to be separate from them completely once they have let go of the work and you could consider extras to be "fan fiction", where as others have word of god powers and can change cannon completely (see Diane Duane with Tom/Carl).

On the one hand, I think that authors can't just willy-nilly change things as they please because they don't like what fandom is doing with their work, but on the other hand -- don't the author's know best about their characters?

So yes, authors getting a say so once their book is published, how it effects cannon etc. What are your thoughts? I don't think there's a right or wrong answer, I'm just wondering. I feel a little like authors should be able to answer all the questions, but then I ponder the fact that part of the feedback process is the fact that people don't know everything. I don't have answers about my characters for everything.

They really aren't under my control.

Sometimes you need other people to bring out things you wouldn't expect.

I leave you with Deryn and Alek. Just cause.

P.S. I need to fix my tags. Fuck.
P.P.S. Also, I know this is me blethering on for ages about not much. I am attempting to be better at posting though, so this is that. I'll get better with more practice, I promise.
