Seventh year in a row doing this. Now it seems like I just have to do it, so do it I shall. Anyways, here is my end of year wrap up, as started the day after Christmas while waiting for Thai food in my roommateless apartment.

It is, in fact, the end of another year.

Funny, 2013 seems to have both been remarkably fast, and also quite slow. I've got complicated feelings about it, and I think part of it is doing a job for a year and the mind numbing effects it can have to go somewhere you don't feel really passionate about and how time slips away from you as you become an adult...

Anyways, but back to the questionnaire. It's my sixth year of doing this, and I find it really interesting to go through it again and again and see how I've changed.

Man, I just was re-reading some of my old posts on here. Did you know, I used to post multiple times a day, saying ABSOLUTELY nothing. AND PEOPLE READ IT!

I just have no words for the self involved world I lived in.

I am grateful for it though. I know that it won't matter for everyone else, but looking back at it, hearing my own voice, and how its changed... its nice. And you know what, having a chronicle of the days, its interesting to look through them, see dates and important things to me and see the change.

Maybe I'll get back into journalling.

Probably not here though. Much as I enjoy this sort of thing, I need something on the cloud.

Also, I need something that doesn't require titles cause I was going back through my journal looking for a specific entry and couldn't find it cause I just used a lot of vague song titles or "no subject".

*shakes fist at self*

I'll just have to figure out a better way of doing this.
winterseaspray: (surprise)
Apparently, I have 92 books on Audible, most of which I have read/listened to already. The following list is all the books I haven't read and which I intend to get through by the end of the year. Though, might be a tad difficult as I get two new books every month, and despite thinking I'm not going to find anything, I always to the day I get them. What's up with that? As I go through, I'll cross off books I've read.

Reamde - Neal Stephenson
Graceling - Kristin Cashore
The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern
Divergent - Veronica Roth
The Janus Affair - Pip Ballantine, Tee Morris
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle - Arthur Conan Doyle
The City of Ember - Jeanne DuPrau
Omnitopia Dawn - Diane Duane
The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Casual Vacancy - J. K. Rowling
Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
The Malice of Fortune - Michael Ennis
House of Sand and Fog - Andre Dubus III
The Declaration - Gemma Malley
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - Seth Grahame-Smith

On the Origin of Species - Charles Darwin
The Disappearing Spoon - Sam Kean
The Selfish Gene - Richard Dawkins
How the Mind Works - Steven Pinker
Packing for Mars - Mary Roach

Oh look, another end of year and here I am, just remembering to do this. KIDDING. I started this on the 18th, but am finishing tonight.

Dangnabbit! I didn't finish in time for assignments! Apologies, I have rectified.

Oh wow, is it that time of year again? I'd completely forgotten. Admittedly, last year was different for... some reason? I've been told that it was different anyways. Something about late sign ups or early -- couldn't really tell. I pretty much do this when told. WOOPS, should be better and not say things like that. (LOOK KAT, NOT EVEN BLAMING YOU FOR THIS THIS YEAR).

Anywho, my letter )

Really livejournal? The fan fiction debate is up on the main page. Kind of makes me want to stab authors. )

In other news... RP still is eating my life. :|

January goals = none fulfilled. Unless you count re-reading cause I did re-read the Hunger Games in prep for the movie... But I don't.

First month of the job went like this: firs two weeks, get up at 5 am to get to Framingham for training. Then I didn't have work for ages and ages which was WEIRD. Then the plant was in shut down so I would come to work and they'd be like "... we have... nothing for you to do." AWKWARD TIMES GUYS.

Thus far my job has involved cleaning and then the other night slipping in chemicals and getting sent home early. Awesomesauce. Have yet to work a full shift. Have still managed to badly bruise myself and breathe in toxic fumes. It wasn't like I needed my arms and lungs. Pfffft.

Anyways, that was January for you. Next up, my reading list for this year.

Oh right, feb goals.

1. Editing: Open the document and re-read the damn thing.
2. Reading: 1 book. Should be easy, I just started Mastiff, the newest Tamora Pierce book.
3. Schedule: Go to the fucking gym. Oh, should be more clear. Um. Go to the gym once a week. Seriously.
winterseaspray: (boomerang)
Um, guys, you know my "end of year wrap up" post. You know there's a question about who was the best new person you met this year and I was like "I dunno... Kristen"?

I kind of forgot that I found the board this year. HOLY CRAP. That means Terri, Kim, Janie, XII, Paula, Christy, Suki, Kennedy, and Spooks, ALL COUNT.

Seriously, these guys are all really great people, and fun to write with and super friendly and part of the reason I remain sane today. I know I get obsessive about RP, but this is a great group of people and I feel like I'm part of a community and like I could share things with these people that I can't share with others. Its wonderful, and there's so much good that can come from it. I can't believe I forgot about them. D:

But yes -- favorite people of last year.

Remind me not to open my computer before work. It slows me waaaaaaay down.

So went to see Sherlock Holmes 2 today. Really enjoyed it. I'm bulleting the things I liked, cause otherwise its a GIANT paragraph of nonsense:
spoilers may be contained within )
Overall thoroughly enjoyable and fun. Its the kind of movie I would call a 'romp'. Its not going to tell you about the meaning of life, nor is it particularly gripping, but its fun, and easy to watch and there's a mystery, and there's fun things going on and forward progression. Its fun, light, fluff. For those of us who aren't huge fans of rom-coms.
winterseaspray: (struggle)
In keeping with the last post, I shall now reveal my three goals for the next month:

1. Editing: Spend 5 hours a week editing. I'm not quite sure how I'm gonna calculate this, but we'll see.
2. Reading: 3 books.
3. Schedule: Go to the gym twice a week on a schedule.

Let's see how this goes.

Dear Yuletide Santa,

My mother always tells me to write thank you notes once I've received a gift -- like right away before anything else can happen and you forget who gave you the gift. I'm not terribly concerned that I'll forget who gave me this gift (for one thing, The Reveal has yet to happen, and for another, even if I did forget I could look you up. HELLO INTERNET I LOVE YOU), but I am always of the opinion that right now is better (... for thank yous? I mean, generally I am an impatient person when it comes to personal gain... though I am extremely patient in other parts of my life). POINT I WANTED TO WRITE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL AND FULL OF LOVE FOR THIS.

Um, but its me, so its not going to be beautiful. JUST FULL OF LOVE.

WHY AM I SO FULL OF LOVE? (this is a reference to a magnet on my fridge) )

So, yes, you have totally made my day. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much.

I'm supposed to be doing work, but I saw this and wanted to do it.

So I was sitting in the kitchen, being all "I'm working on my yuletide so I could actually send my beta something" when I run over to tumblr to see my beta's letter again (not that my recipient's letter isn't great, but there was something in my beta's letter that sparked me for things and so I wanted to remember what it was, since she requested the same fandom) and then I clicked on her tags because, you know its tumblr, what else do you do?

So Sam is over, and Kat is supposed to be studying so I had to leave the room because I was going to be making weird noises of joy while reading. ANYWAYS.

cut for spoilers for the whole series )

So anyways, bonus chapters! I wanted to talk about them in general out of the cut because I'm curious about things. Scott Westerfeld called this bonus "fan fiction" of himself, which is really interesting to me. I think if I were going to write something like this I would call it a short story with the same characters rather then fan fiction -- because well I'm not exactly a fan of my own writing?

Anyways. I was thinking about it because I am planning my epic fic for Leviathan, and this throws a minor wrench in my plan if I consider this to be cannon. But if Scott is calling it fan fiction, does that mean its not cannon? Some authors (creators, directors etc) consider their work to be separate from them completely once they have let go of the work and you could consider extras to be "fan fiction", where as others have word of god powers and can change cannon completely (see Diane Duane with Tom/Carl).

On the one hand, I think that authors can't just willy-nilly change things as they please because they don't like what fandom is doing with their work, but on the other hand -- don't the author's know best about their characters?

spoilers for the bonus fic )
So yes, authors getting a say so once their book is published, how it effects cannon etc. What are your thoughts? I don't think there's a right or wrong answer, I'm just wondering. I feel a little like authors should be able to answer all the questions, but then I ponder the fact that part of the feedback process is the fact that people don't know everything. I don't have answers about my characters for everything.

They really aren't under my control.

Sometimes you need other people to bring out things you wouldn't expect.

I leave you with Deryn and Alek. Just cause.

P.S. I need to fix my tags. Fuck.
P.P.S. Also, I know this is me blethering on for ages about not much. I am attempting to be better at posting though, so this is that. I'll get better with more practice, I promise.
winterseaspray: (Default)
Oh yes, I used Britney Spears as my subject line. I am a 90s child and I don't give a damn. :D

Anyways, I have come to a decision. Its time I do one of two things take LiveJournal off of my bookmark links and check it when Kat posts and tells me about it, or actually start posting again and make some LJ friends.

I think I've decided to go with the latter. I can always do with more friends, especially friends with similar interests to me (ie. reading, watching TV, writing wherever will I find people with the same interests? LJ is devoid of people who like to watch TV and write I'm sure).

I guess this would then be an introductory post for me before I, wander off and do friending memes on communities for shows I like, I guess. How does one make online friends again?

Or I could procrastinate some more and do things like organize my friends, make my journal look pretty and determine icons that I like best. Hmmmm, whatever will I do.
winterseaspray: (annoy)
Season One: Hahahaha, you are funny. Ted and Robin won't be together, so why are you so focused on this?
Season Two: Hahahahaha, Oh HIMYM. Lily and Marshall are apart for like, three minutes. They are great together despite this. Robin and Ted are fun together, though again, we know they aren't going to end up together so why are we focusing on them? ROBIN SPARKLES.
Season Three: Robin and Barney sleep together. OMG I LOVE THEM TOGETHER. Ted and Barney friends. Hi Stella, you're cute, I love you Sarah Chalke.
Season Four: Really? Ted gets left at the alter, okay... ROBIN AND BARNEY!!!
Season Five: Train wreck. Really. Train wreck. Let's stop writing Robin as her character.
Season Six: Robin returns to her normal self. The show is good. Still laughing.
Season Seven: Yay, Robin growing up and making the right choice for herself and going with Kevin (WHO I LOVE OKAY GUYS I WANT HIM TO BE AROUND ALL THE TIME BUT HOW CAN I ACCOMODATE ROBIN AND BARNEY AND KEVIN COMPLICATED FEELINGS). And then... the mid season finale.

Wow, its been ages since I posted here. Anyways, its that time of year again -- Yuletide -- and since Yuletide has been magic to me, I am doing it again. :D
