So I'm sitting here, being bored instead of studying, which is what I should be doing, and thinking about this summer and what I want to accomplish with this summer. I mean, clearly I want to do well in my classes, and at my job, but there is something more that I want to do with this summer -- I want to actually edit a novel and get it ready to send off somewhere.
Anyways, if any of you want to, at the end of the summer, read an edited version of which ever novel I edit, then it could be a bit of an encouragement to make me actually do it (and since I start school earlier then most of you, it would be towards the end of your summer, but not really). Anyone interested? Possibly?
I write fantasy fiction, more action oriented then romance -- but there is romance. They are clearly not going to be perfect, but they will be much better then they are now, and I need someone to be interested. I don't want to be told that its amazing at the end. I want to know when you put it down and stop wanting to read it. I want to know what plot holes you see there. I want to see what you think of it. Most of you read fantasy fiction anyways, so you know what is good, you know what is bad and I trust you guys.
So, if you're interested, just leave a note here and I'll get in touch with you about it. You can pull out, it won't be till the end of August after all, but, I just like to think there is a tiny audience for it.
Here are the options. Anyone wanna weigh in on what sounds the most interesting, please also comment.
I've written seven novels in total (first draft only). I'm listing them all, but will only do descriptions for those I am willing to edit. The titles are all tentative, and most have multiple designations.
1. Crelerwar -- Apinda
2. Nysad -- Past and Future Queen:
Nysad wakes up in a castle that was stopped still in time, killing everyone within it, leaving only skeletons behind. She can't remember anything about her past -- even her own name. In the castle she finds an old sword and a necklace. Without knowing what they do, she takes them as she tries to find out who she is. She is joined later by the most powerful demon in the land: Emek and a Lord's daughter, Kess and finds that she is the heir to a joint destiny, one that holds the key to her past and who she really is.
3. The Rise of Darkness -- Adair Books 1
4. The Quiet Darkness -- Adair Books 2
5. The Dark Spiral -- Adair Books 3
6. Pawn: The First Book Of Chess
Andrew, Ava and Ella are pulled from our world into another world -- one that is very strange. It is a chess board, one with strange creatures from the deep, and races that live in a constant battle against one another. The Pieces on the board are involved in everything, and with Andrew's appearance there is a flurry because he is one of the black pawns back again -- something that has not happened in 700 years. The Pieces wonder -- does this mean the other peices are being recalled? With no answers, Andrew takes his place as a Pawn of the Black Court, and learns about this strange world that apparently is his home. But all the while he is looking for a way to get home. There has to have been some kind of mistake.
7. Five Senses -- Council of Five
The powerful Baker family rose to power after they informed the world about Ability, the powers of some people to see the future, or smell the present, or taste the living, or feel the past. Now, a hundred years later, Jon Baker, the youngest son, is the only Baker in living memory who does not have Ability. Instead he is diagnosed as a schizophrenic and is kept out of the way. Recovered from his last hospitalization, Jon is now working for the government as a field agent when his mother dies. The family gathers together for the funeral, and a strange conflagration of events occur. Samantha, a cousin and Finder, gets caught up in a murder investigation with Annette, a local Feeler, with whom Jon works closely. Meanwhile, Cassandra, Jon's sister, gets terribly ill, and Jon is called upon to help her. Chris, Jon's brother, is busy with his campaign to get elected as Governor of the North Eastern Confederate States, but threats have been coming in towards his children. And some how, Jon knows these events are connected, and its up to him to find out what connects them and to discover what really is wrong with him.
Now I've said all that, I realize that part of the problem is I don't know how to edit something this long. In short stories, you move things around and make sure sentence structure is good, but how do you go about ripping apart your novel and making it better? Do you keep what worked, or do you simply start all over again? There are sections of a couple of my novels that I really like, but I somehow know that they won't end up in the final version.
How do you edit? I need help with this. Not even novels, but papers, short stories, artistic works. Let me know. Anything could be useful.

Date: 2009-04-24 08:24 pm (UTC)I've never written anything that long. Ever. However, when I did write, I'd do it in bits and then continuously come back to them. See what's good, keep and edit, move around-- I had a junk document of bits i'd written and rejected but kept. But i'd never gotten to anything this big though, sooooo I don't know what else to tell you.
But call whenever. you know where to find me.

Date: 2009-04-25 05:28 am (UTC)Should warn you about Samantha in my novel -- she is in no way based off of you or anything I think about you... I like her, but she has some flaws that are rather hard to over look. Anyways, just thought I'd put the seed in your head way a head of the game ^^;
